People have said that it's better to move past it and get on with our daily lives. In a sense, they are right. We cannot dwell upon the sadness we felt eight years ago.
But to them, I say, we can never forget what happened that day. Thousands of people perished, our lives were changed forever, and our country united more than it had been since World War II. Freedom was challenged, and fear, something we've lived without for so long, became real to us again.
No matter where your political loyalties lie, this was a tragic event for everyone. Our country, our nation built upon a rock, was shaken and brought to its knees. But with each passing year millions forget. A new generation is rising, a generation too young to remember what happened that day. It is our fault that they do not remember. It is our fault if we ourselves forget.
It's too bad that patriotism only comes through on days such as this, only to go away and hide until our next national holiday. Let us turn off "Jon and Kate Plus 8," "American Idol," and meaningless celebrity gossip. It's time for a change, America. It's time to remember who we are and how we got here. Let us always remember.
